Effective July, 2011, the federal government has increased both Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement for 680,000 low income seniors.

The Yukon Seniors Income Supplement provides an income supplement of up to $200 monthly to low income seniors 65 years and over who are also receiving the federal old age security (OAS) and guaranteed income supplement (GIS).
This supplement is also provided to spouses (60-65 years of age) who are in receipt of the Spouses Allowance or Widowed Spouses Allowance. Individuals who are eligible for this program will automatically qualify when they apply for the federal pensions.

If you are eligible for the Federal Guaranteed Income Supplement Program, you may be eligible for the YSIS depending on your total income. If eligible, you will not be required to apply. Seniors do have to apply for the GIS, one time only, and then they can re-apply automatically, each year, for the GIS by filing their income tax return.
