Based on the YCJA, the purpose of youth sentencing is to help protect communities by holding a young person accountable for their actions. Rehabilitating and reintegrating youth into the community are the desired end results.

The various sentencing options include:

• A reprimand – similar to a warning
• An absolute discharge
• A conditional discharge – supervision may be imposed
• A fine – up to $1,000
• An order to pay compensation or special damages – consideration will be given as to the young person’s ability to pay
• An order for the restitution (payback) of property
• An order to perform community service – up to 240 hours
• Probation – maximum of 2 years
• An Attendance Order - an order for mandatory attendance at a non-residential program (Youth Achievement Centre – Whitehorse only)
• Compensation (in any number of ways) of the victim
• An order for prohibition, seizure or forfeiture – taking away privileges
• Intensive Support and Supervision – support and monitoring by a youth worker
• Deferred Custody and Community Supervision (i.e., residence approved by the court)
• Open Custody and Community Supervision (i.e., caregiver home)
• Secure Custody and Community Supervision - Young Offenders Facility
• Custody and Conditional Supervision
• Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision (IRCS) – Young Offenders Facility

Adult sentences may be given under the YCJA for youth found guilty of offences such as murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, aggravated sexual assault, serious, repeat violent offences, or other serious offences.
