H1N1 Influenza A (Human Swine Flu)
The World Health Organization has raised the the pandemic alert level to Phase 6.
Phase 6 is declared when there is evidence of sustained community transmission in more than one WHO region - indicating that a global pandemic is under way. The declaration is based on the spread of the virus, and not on the severity of the illness it causes.

H1N1 Influenza A originated in Mexico in April 2009. H1N1 is a new influenza virus made up of a mixture of genes derived from human, pig, and animal strains. It causes a similar illness to the usual seasonal influenza. Because it is a new virus causing disease in many parts of the world, H1N1 influenza has been declared a pandemic by WHO.
