WHITEHORSE - Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart today announced the names of the 11 Yukon recipients of this year's post-secondary health and medical education bursaries.
"I am very pleased to announce the names of these Yukon residents who have chosen the health field or medicine as a career and we are very proud to be able to support them in achieving their goal," Hart said.
The two students receiving the Medical Education Bursary are Dayna Lea Briemon and Stephanie Matchett, who are both in their first year at the University of B.C., and are planning to be general practitioners.
The government is presently supporting eight Yukon medical students at universities across the country.
The five recipients of this year's Health Profession Education Bursary are Bernice Alderson, Marg Wallace, Tara Goodwin, Diane Emond, and Jennifer Andre. Wallace, Goodwin and Emond are all entering their first year of the practical nurse program at Yukon College. Alderson is beginning her first year at the Southern Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary in the diagnostic medical sonography program and Andre is in her second year at the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT) in the medical radiography program.
The Yukon Health Education Bursary program currently supports nine students in a variety of health programs.
In addition, four Yukon students have received the Nursing Bursary. Shelly Anderson, Jackie Jules, Sally Fozzard, and Ceilidhe Dabbs are all in nursing programs and will receive $5000 per year for a maximum of four years.
A total of 12 nursing students are currently being supported through the bursary program.
"We are fortunate that our young people are interested in health and medical professions," Hart said. "We know that nationally there is a shortage of health care professionals and I am encouraged by the number of young Yukoners who are entering the field."
The government provides the three different health education bursary programs under its Health Human Resources Strategy which was launched in 2006. The three programs have provided support to a total of 41 students since they were introduced.
“Our government wishes the recipients success in their studies and we look forward to them returning home to pursue their careers in the health care field," Hart added.
