Hospice Yukon to Receive Additional Funds
For Release #07-237
November 6, 2007
WHITEHORSE – Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers announced today an additional $40,000 for Hospice Yukon this year.
Hospice Yukon provides confidential grief support and counseling to the dying, their loved ones and those who are grieving. It also offers support groups, one on one counseling, and public education.
"Hospice Yukon and its volunteers provide an excellent service that supports Yukoners during what is perhaps the most difficult time in anyone’s life – facing the end of their own life, or the loss of a loved one," Cathers said. "The organization is experiencing an increase in demand for their services and we are pleased to be able to help them so they can help those in need."
With the new funding, this year, Hospice will receive a total of $234,000. "As we move forward with developing our palliative care program, we will work with Hospice Yukon to determine their financial needs for 08/09 and for future fiscal years," Cathers added.
Hospice Executive Director Cathy Routledge said the organization was most appreciative of the new funds.
"Providing skilled, compassionate care, education and advocacy at the end of life requires a committed team of caregivers. We are very pleased by the Yukon government's response to the growth of our organization as we support individuals and their loved ones facing bereavement and death," Routledge said.
Hospice Yukon is also working closely with Continuing Care on the development of a palliative care program for the territory.
