Government Expands Continuing Care

For Release #07-087
May 9, 2007

WHITEHORSE – The Department of Health and Social Services received funding approval today to open up the last Copper Ridge Place unit.

"I am pleased to announce that we will be opening the remaining wing of Copper Ridge Place," Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers said today. "This means Copper Ridge Place will be running at full capacity with the addition of these 12 beds."

Opening this unit will provide relief to clients on the continuing care waiting list and help address bed pressure on the Whitehorse General Hospital.

The cost of operating the 12-bed unit for a year is $1,474,000.

"As you know," said Cathers, “we're dealing with some unexpected delays in opening the Thomson Centre. Opening this unit will help alleviate the waiting list and provide comfort to families."

The department will be moving forward immediately to purchase equipment and hire staff for the 12-bed unit in Copper Ridge Place, which will open as soon as that is complete.

Copper Ridge Place is a 96-bed facility that provides residential and respite care, including extended care, complex chronic care and special care.
