Increase to Yukon Child Benefit to Help Low-Income Families

For Release #07-264
December 6, 2007

WHITEHORSE – To assist low-income Yukoners with the costs of raising their children, Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers announced today an increase to the Yukon Child Benefit (YCB).

The Yukon government has approved two changes to the YCB. The first change increases the base benefit to $57.50 per child, per month from $37.50 per child, per month. In addition, the annual income range for those receiving the maximum benefit will increase to $30,000 a year from $25,000.

"By raising the base at which families can receive the maximum Child Benefit to $30,000, an additional 235 Yukon children will now receive the maximum level," Cathers said. "We hope to have both changes implemented by mid-January 2008."

The increase to the YCB is another initiative resulting from the comprehensive review of social assistance. It closely follows the announcement in late November on proposed changes to social assistance rates and programs structures, and the announcement earlier last month on the increase to the Child Care Subsidy.

"This is another Yukon government initiative that supports our commitment to help all low to middle income families, and not just those on social assistance," Cathers stated.
