Ten more beds open at Thomson Centre

WHITEHORSE—Residents are moving into the next 10 beds at Thomson Centre announced Health and Social Services Minister Doug Graham. The move began today and will continue over the next two weeks.

This means that Thomson Centre will soon house 28 residents. The facility opened the first 18 beds late last summer.

“These additional 10 continuing care beds will greatly benefit the residents, their families and the overall health care system,” Graham said. “Our wait list for Yukoners who need full-time care is growing and the expanded use of Thomson Centre will help us meet that need.”

The occupants of the 10 additional beds are coming from the community, other care facilities and the Whitehorse General Hospital.

Thomson Centre was built as a long-term care facility and was designed to house 48 residents. Graham said continuing care is now at capacity in four facilities with 172 beds filled. He added that plans are underway to renovate and open the remaining beds at Thomson Centre.
