Health Information Privacy and Management Act

The Health Information Privacy and Management Act (HIPMA) is a new, modern, law designed to improve the way your personal health information is protected and shared. As of August 31, 2016, the Act is in force.

The Health Information Privacy and Management Act (HIPMA), governs the collection, use, and disclosure of personal health information. This new law creates rules for how personal health information is protected and managed. The Act balances an individual’s right to have their personal health information protected with the need of health care providers to have access to a patient’s health information to provide them with the best possible care.

Highlights of the new Act:

  • Rules for how your personal health information is collected, used, disclosed and secured.
  • Sets maximum fees that can be charged and a maximum length of time health care providers can take to provide you with copies of your health records.
  • Consistent rules for preventing and managing any potential information breaches.
  • Increased security by limiting the use of the Yukon Health Care Card number.
