World Café Ideas
SUMMARY OF IDEAS FROM WORLD CAFÉ
Here is a sampling of the ideas that were generated by people at small tables during the World Café exercise on September 29. The question for discussion was “What do we need to do together to make changes on FASD?”
- work together to increase our interconnectedness
- increase our understanding of the experience of birth moms
- ensure that diagnosis leads to supports
- start with strengths, positives
- more long-term financial support for people with FASD
- gain a better understanding of the needs of people with FASD
- change one human at a time
- raise awareness of people about the experiences of people with FASD, e.g. invite Myles to speak at conferences (e.g. of teachers)
- provide core funding
- develop a one-stop shop of integrated services for women (with substance use problems) and their families
- work together to get a “Sheway-type program” and a “Mentor” program
- little pockets of people working together on different initiatives
- talk to kids/youth about possibility of no alcohol
- bring more awareness in the school system of people with FASD (e.g. panel of people with FASD to speak to students and teachers)
- normalize the need for support (show people that it is OK to need and accept support)
- meet pregnant women where they are at
- get Ministesr to talk together to develop solutions together (health, education, justice)
- get facts on FASD and who is affected (prevalence) to reduce stigma
- departments should talk together
- remove silos to make to easier for people and plan for life-long supports
- have diversion in the justice system for people with FASD
- change the name of FASD to lessen stigma
- give educators tools to support students with FASD and promote learning
- need process for transferring confidential information efficiently between programs and within programs/systems (e.g. from school to school or school to adult supports)
- identifying needs and solutions must come from the bottom up (start by talking to people with FASD about what they need)
