Rural Physician for Faro

If you're a rural doctor in Yukon, the territory can be your backyard

The Yukon government is looking for a rural physician for the community of Faro 357 km (222 miles) northwest of Whitehorse. Tucked away between the Hess and Pelly Mountains, Faro is a tranquil place that offers old-fashioned hospitality. Its abundance of clear blue lakes, mountain ranges, winding rivers and lush green valleys make the area surrounding the community a year-round playground for sports enthusiasts.

With its population of 400 residents, Faro has a health centre staffed by nurse practitioners who share space with a physician, giving patients a choice of health care provider. Health care providers service not only the community of Faro but other communities in the area, including Ross River and Carmacks.

Departing physician Dr. Dick Fast had the following to say:

“Of my 40 years in medicine, the 12 that I practised in Faro were the best. Happy collaboration with first class community nurses made for a sense of achievement. The communities were appreciative. Government meddling with our medicine was virtually zero. Responsibility was heavy. Recompense was good. The wilderness was spectacular.”

Locum and Whitehorse pediatrician Dr. Robert Bousquet:

“This would work nicely for a doc who wants a quiet lifestyle, and who is probably close to retirement. It offers the opportunity of working in different cultural settings (First Nations and Caucasian) in a beautiful area offering untold opportunities for hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. A physician in Faro would always have, not only the support of the nurses, but ready support of Whitehorse General Hospital, and its immensely competent group of physicians. This is key to any rural physician."

Remuneration is by contract with the Yukon government, and residents of the North enjoy significant tax incentives. Benefits include a recruitment and retention package, CME funding, full coverage of Medical Practice Insurance, Resident Support Program, Physician Relocation Fund, Educational Support Program and a Locum Support Program.
