WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon today officially opened the new St. Elias Adult Group Home on Hoge Street.

“This modern 10-bed facility will provide a safe home for individuals currently receiving supports, and creates an opportunity for new individuals with similar support needs,” Minister of Health and Social Services Mike Nixon said. “The new home addresses the need for supported housing and programming for adults with cognitive disabilities.”

The facility offers improved environmental and health standards to provide a healthier space for both residents and staff. It includes enhanced space for the delivery of support services and programs and was designed to provide more inclusive access for residents, their family and community support networks. It will be staffed round-the-clock, seven days a week.

“The completion and opening of this much needed facility is an accomplishment this government can take pride in,” Minister of Highways and Public Works Scott Kent said. “I am pleased a new space is available that offers a degree of independence to Yukoners who face cognitive disabilities.”

The new St. Elias Adult Group Home provides services to people with a broad range of developmental disabilities who require support to live safely, while emphasizing resident autonomy and individualized care. The design of the building provides a home-like environment. The small number of staff and residents, as well as the model of care, allow for flexible options in providing support for residents. Residents will move into the facility next week.
